How to Lower Your Cost Per Lead in Google Ads: 9 Fixes That Work

By the Pixelco team ·

If every lead from Google Ads costs you more than the deal is worth, the problem is rarely “Google doesn’t work for my business.” In most accounts we audit, the budget leaks through a handful of predictable holes. Fix them, and the same budget brings more and better leads.

For one of our clients, AlphaWix (brokerage software), fixing these issues took the cost per lead from over $200 to $75.2 and produced 1370 website applications plus more than 1200 calls. Read the full AlphaWix case study.

Here are the nine fixes we start with.

1. Track real leads, not clicks

You can’t lower cost per lead if Google doesn’t know what a lead is. Set up conversion tracking for every way a customer contacts you:

  • form submissions (tracked on the thank-you page or via a form event),
  • phone calls from ads and from the website,
  • booked appointments, chats or messenger clicks if you use them.

Then tell Google which conversions matter most. If “page views” or “time on site” are set as primary conversions, Smart Bidding will optimize for the wrong thing.

2. Clean up your search terms every week

Open the Search terms report and look at what people actually typed before clicking. You will almost always find searches that will never become customers: job seekers, people looking for free versions, DIY guides, competitors’ login pages.

Add them as negative keywords. In a neglected account, this single habit can cut wasted spend dramatically.

3. Separate high-intent and research keywords

“Brokerage software pricing” and “what is brokerage software” are very different people. The first is ready to buy; the second is learning. Put them in separate campaigns with separate budgets, so research traffic doesn’t eat the money meant for buyers.

4. Send traffic to a landing page, not your homepage

Your homepage talks to everyone. A landing page talks to the person who just clicked one specific ad. A good lead-gen landing page has:

  • a headline that repeats the promise of the ad,
  • one clear offer and one action (call, form or booking),
  • a short form: ask only what sales really needs,
  • proof: reviews, logos, numbers, case studies,
  • a fast load time on mobile.

Need one built? That’s exactly what our web development team does.

5. Make the offer worth responding to

“Contact us” is not an offer. “Get a free quote in 15 minutes”, “Book a 20-minute demo” or “Get your custom rate” give people a reason to act now. Test two or three offers: the difference in conversion rate is often bigger than any bidding tweak.

6. Use the right bidding strategy at the right time

Smart Bidding (Maximize Conversions, Target CPA) works well once a campaign has enough conversion data. With very little data, it can spend erratically. A common path:

  1. start with manual or Maximize Clicks with sensible limits to collect data,
  2. switch to Maximize Conversions once conversions are flowing,
  3. set a Target CPA once results are stable.

7. Schedule ads for when you can answer

If your team can’t pick up the phone at 11 p.m., paying for calls at 11 p.m. is wasted money. Check the hour and day reports and reduce bids (or pause ads) when leads don’t convert or nobody is available to respond.

8. Respond to leads in minutes, not hours

This one isn’t in Google Ads, but it changes your real cost per customer. The faster you call back, the more leads turn into conversations. Send leads straight into your CRM or phone with instant notifications, and make response speed a team habit.

9. Test ads continuously

Keep at least two or three responsive search ads in every ad group, pin your strongest message where it matters, and replace the weakest ads every few weeks. Small CTR gains add up: a higher click-through rate usually means better Quality Score and lower costs per click.

Where to start

If you only have an hour, do these three things today:

  1. check that conversions are tracked correctly,
  2. add negative keywords from the last 30 days of search terms,
  3. make sure every campaign points to a relevant landing page.

If you’d rather have it done for you, our lead generation team will audit your account and show you where the budget is leaking before you spend another dollar.
